I lack sources to cite, but I gather that in the 19th and early 20th centuries nude male artist models wore a cache sexe to cover their willies. Can’t recall any male nudes from that era in which said willies roamed free.

That’s because it is, Barb. And since the sculpture features no swaths of flowing fabric, the sculptor must strain ingenuity and credulity, giving the bobbed haired model locks long enough to cover the guy's naughty bits.
