Bondage / Captivity / Interrogation / Torture Scenes in Mainstream Movies

Now let us talk about a range of films most popular in cinema's history: the "PEPLUM" (the latin word for women's
robe in ancient Greece) aka "SWORD AND SANDAL". Some prestigious Hollywood's products also rank as 'Peplums' ('Ben Hur", "Quo Vadis", "Barabbas","The Robe") but at much higher level. The italian 'sword and sandal' was synonymus of low-budget films produced in Italy from the late fifties to the sixties. In my green years I enjoyed the vision of peplums at the cinema. No brain's effort was required to follow the simple plots, all similar with slight variations and change of Actors, but relentless action and amusement were guaranteed. The stories were based on Greek-Roman mithology, events of ancient civilizations (Assyrian,Egyptian,Bible's Stories), Greek-Roman History(often not adherent to reality), fights with mitological monsters ,etc. They featured muscular male protagonists , one for all the american bodybuilder Steve Reeves along with beautiful girls scantily clad in short robes of intentional prurient effect. A vein of erotic sadism also emerged because both female and male characters were put through torture, whippings and often crucifixion in every movie of this subgenre. The male protagonist was confronted with amazing excessive adventures to defeat the evil antagonist for the purpose to save the girls in peril and restore justice.
The stories always ended with the marriage between the male and female leading characters.
Owing to the limited means at disposal the same interior and/or exterior sets were used for more than one film. The exteriors(buildings etc.)
were ,for the same reason, made of coloured polystyrene but the illusion was perfect.
"PEPLUMS' or "SWORD AND SANDAL" are usually divided in sub cathegories : - History ( Greek-Roman or otherwise) , Mithology (Greek-Roman), Fantasy/Adventure (Hercules, Maciste, etc.)

Gate of Flesh (1964) is a Japanese movie, about young prostitutes in Tokyo, just after the surrender in 1945. Both the city and society lay in ruins. Every client, US soldiers or Japanese men, may as well be a threat. The girls stick together, but they tolerate neither that one of them gives free seks, nor falls in love with a client. In that case, ruthless punishment follows.
There is a scene in which one of the girls, who has broken the rule, is suspended naked by her wrists in their 'home', a bombed out building, and repeatedly whipped. Afterwards, she is left dangling, while the others eat and chat.

This title is, of course, cathegorised as 'Pinku Eigu' and is one of the classics of the genre depicting ,through the story of a bunch of prostitues, ong others, the social misery and degradation in Japan soon after end of World War II

Classic whipping scene. But Jack Palance as a Mongol? I'm sorry, but he's not nearly as convincing as John Wayne was as Genghis Khan in "The Conqueror." Lol. I think they were vying for the honorary Oscar for "Best Epicanthic Folds On An Occidental Man," which was ultimately won by Sean Connery for his sensitive portrayal of a Japanese fisherman in "You Only Live Twice."

Maika Monroe tied to a wheelchair in "It Follows," in which she's being pursued by a relentless, homicidal spirit.

Lame, I know. Little more than an excuse, really, to post some off-topic pics of Gretchen Mol from the same movie:

An all Italian cast, apparently ... with the exception of Steve Reeves? How did he get in there?
Just lucky.
From IMDB:
Though he did not possess a Herculean acting talent by any stretch, handsome bodybuilder Steve Reeves certainly had an enviable Herculean physique, and made plenty good use of it in Europe during the late 1950s and early 1960s portraying some of filmdom's most famous bronzed gods. Reeves was originally a Montana boy born on a cattle ranch in 1926. His destiny was revealed early in the game when, at the age of six months, he won his first fitness title as "Healthiest Baby of Valley County." His father Lester died in a farming accident when Steve was just a boy, and his family moved to Oakland (California). He first developed an interest in bodybuilding while in high school.

Steve joined the Army in his late teens where his job was loading boxcars and trucks. He also worked out loyally at the gym during his free time and the combination helped develop his body quite rapidly. Following Army service (he served for a time in the Pacific), he decided to pursue bodybuilding professionally. In 1946, at the age of 20, he won "Mr. Pacific Coast" in Oregon, which led to his titles of "Mr. Western America" (1947), Mr. America" (1947), "Mr. World" (1948) and, ultimately, "Mr. Universe" (1950).

With all the body-worshiping publicity he garnered, he decided to travel to New York to study and pursue acting. He subsequently returned to California...and Hollywood. There were not huge opportunities for a muscleman in Tinseltown other than providing pectoral background. Steve was, however, considered for the lead role in Cecil B. DeMille's biblical costumer Samson and Delilah (1949), but refused when told by the legendary director he would have to lose some of his musculature (about 15 lbs.). The part instead went to Victor Mature. Steve did manage to snag the role of a detective in infamous director Edward D. Wood Jr.'s Jail Bait (1954). Small parts on TV also came his way, but they too were mostly posing bits or walk-ons. To the Hollywood power players, Steve was just a body. Whether he could act or not was not a concern or selling point. Fans just wanted to see him take his shirt off.

Down on his luck, Steve's fortunes change when Italian film director Pietro Francisci saw him play Jane Powell's boyfriend in the feature film Athena (1954) and persuaded him to go overseas to star in Hercules (1958) (US title: "Hercules"). Though critics dismissed the film as "muddled mythology" while denigrating its cheapjack production values (including a poorly-dubbed sound track), the public went crazy over the sword-and-sandal epic and, in particular, Steve's marvelous beefcake heroics. He became an "overnight" star. Sequels followed, none any better or worse, with him going through the paces as a number absurdly-muscled biblical and mythological figures. An able horseman, he also performed many of his own stunts. Moreover, he paved the way for other pumped-up acting hopefuls (Ed Fury, Mark Forest, Reg Park) to seek their fame and fortune in Italy as a feature-length Samson, Ursus or Colossus. Nobody, however, came close to topping Steve in popularity.

My 11th and 12 grade PhD Latin teacher when he was in college was into body building. He worked out several times with Steve. Said he was an excellent BB but dumb as mud.
"Nobody, however, came close to topping Steve in popularity." until Arnold.

Another scene of the same movie shows her pulled to the extreme by the Inquisitors on a torture rack. Her reactions to pain give the impression that she is suffering for real. Her sinuous wonderful body adds up to the arousing effect. The only flaw is that she is clad in this scene.

In those years Jack Palance was inclined to accept weird roles in European movies. In 1969 he was in "Marquis De Sade Justine"
directed by Jess Franco. He acted as an out of mind head of a sect of torturers of beautiful girls.
