Wonderfully evocative expressions on the men's faces, and the way in which the victim is covering her head ... almost as though she is in denial ... or doesn't wish to see or be seen by the watching men.

I really like the first one. Calling Dorothy Brown.. But I must ask what that device is in the second one.

This one is very interesting ... are you sure that it is an authentic American newspaper engraving from 1878? While it seems plausible that a white woman might be publicly flogged for stealing, it seems improbable to me that a black man would be allowed to whip her, especially in a state like Virginia. I suppose if she were a prostitute or some form of low life, that might make sense. But otherwise, I find it remarkable.

It is, whatever it's true provenance, a great pic ... one that certainly draws my attention and which conjures up lots of stories in my mind.
