View attachment 532403 This one is very interesting ... are you sure that it is an authentic American newspaper engraving from 1878? While it seems plausible that a white woman might be publicly flogged for stealing, it seems improbable to me that a black man would be allowed to whip her, especially in a state like Virginia. I suppose if she were a prostitute or some form of low life, that might make sense. But otherwise, I find it remarkable.
It is, whatever it's true provenance, a great pic ... one that certainly draws my attention and which conjures up lots of stories in my mind.
I'm pretty sure legal flogging of women was no longer done by 1878 and certainly a white woman flogged by a black man would have been verboten. But it's a nice picture, of course.
