A plot to injure and possibly kill the young Duchess of Orléans, hatched by some of her senior household employees in retaliation for her ill-treatment of staff, had almost suceeded. A trap had been set in local woods designed to cause her horse to throw her. Bruised and shaken but otherwise unharmed, she vowed vengeance on the perpetrators.
Ahead of the ensuing investigation, a hastily organised pact between the real perpetrators resulted in their agreement that they would all blame a young servant girl, Marie, whom the staff knew the duchess disliked and envied. The accusations, though tenuous, were sufficient to motivate the enraged and sadistic young aristocrat to organise, along with the local town sherrif and judiciary, a sentence of severe public whipping in the town square, which she would personally supervise."
