That's the best thing about the Chinese execution role-plays
(yes they are role-plays, in case anyone's worried),
the kunbang arm bondage is very effective,
as the wrists are jerked up to be tied to the neck,
it hurts enough to give a sharp little sense, "This is it!"
to the condemned girl, and once that's done,
she's totally under their control, and the board
with her name crossed out, her crime spelt out,
can be forced - again causing a spasm of discomfort -
down between her arms and her shoulders.

Interesting ... I am always intrigued by the use of those boards ... they appear to be an effective tool of humiliation as well as pain?

They seem to go back to Imperial times -
at least we see them in images of executions in ancient China just as in present-day ones.
Given the importance of 'face' in oriental cultures,
I think they, and the whole procedure, are a ritual of humiliation.

I don’t smoke. I asked for one as a way of stalling. I didn’t think they would actually give one and light it. Having gone that far and not wanting to look ridiculous, I took a drag. Humiliation comes in many forms, but in one sense it worked. I hacked and coughed so much, they took pity on me and waited till I stopped before they shot me.
