Bridewell, My Penance, My Pain. Pt 33
Livia was left to hang at the back of the workroom until our work shift was complete. For the most part we ignored her crying and moaning but Elsbeth couldn’t pass up the opportunity to heckle the perched beauty. “Not such a haughty bitch now, are you Livia. Guess your James didn’t like shagging your cunny. By the looks of it, it ain’t gonna be doing no shaggin for quite a while.” We could hear Livia scream out obscenities as Elsbeth returned to her seat at her spinning wheel.
I can tell that Livia is almost going mad from the pain as she hangs from the perch for several more hours. By the time the guards finally released her, her sweat soaked body is limp. She has lost consciousness and feeling in her limbs by then and has to be carried by the guards to the prison hospital. It is another ten days before Livia is returned to the workgroup.
Obviously not enthralled with her stay so far at Bridewell, Olivia successfully is able to get word to her former husband Miles, begging his forgiveness and playing on his sympathy. She wants out of Bridewell in the worst way and will do anything to find her way to that outcome. Miles will never think of taking Livia back as his wife after she has dragged the Cowerd family name through the mud. But he did miss the pleasure she provided in his bed and is willing to take her back, not as his wife, but as his concubine.
Livia is not happy with his proposition but realizes that it is the only opportunity available to her to gain her release, so she agrees. Now it was up to Miles to pay off the governor and get her out of this hellhole. Miles actually does act quickly, getting word to governor Abbott and sets up a meeting. Livia is not privy to when the meeting is to take place nor what the two men will talk about, she just has to trust Miles will do his part.
The meeting did take place just about the time that Livia is released from the hospital. The meeting is long and money is not the only issue to be settled. It did not end until both men are satisfied that they will get what they want. Livia will be released as Miles Cowerd requests but not before punishment day. Much of the rest of the meeting time is-spent deciding what her welcome punishment will be and how many strokes. Finally after hashing out a few more details the two men seal the agreement by sharing a bottle of expensive sherry.
Livia keeps a low profile after her return, hoping that her stay at Bridewell will be short and not wanting to ruffle any feathers.
She did not want to face any type of punishment before she is set free. She is anxious when she sees one of the guards posting the schedule for punishment day a week from this Friday. She pushes her way through the group of women to read what is printed on the posting:
Punishment Day Friday June 20th
Welcomes
Cornelia Parker 36 strokes cat of nine tails
and the stocks.
Justine Wilson. 36 strokes cat of nine tails
and the stocks.
Agnes Whelan 18 strokes heavy cane
Violet Pelter. 18 strokes heavy cane
Prudence Lawson 18 strokes heavy cane
Livia Lester To be determined
Livia is ecstatic when she sees the posting. She is sure that Miles has kept his part of the bargain and the “to be determined” means that she will avoid punishment. She feels sorry for her friends, her plea to Miles did not include them. Unfortunately they will have to face their canings and the rest of their time at Bridewell without her help.
I am ecstatic that the name Pennyworth does not appear on the posting. This is the first punishment day since I have arrived at Bridewell that I will not be part of the festivities. (To be continued)
