I love these historical hiccups - clearly a mix-up happened somewhere between the time (late 17th cent) when Charles Perrault put his name to the story of Cendrillon and 100 years later when the Brothers Grimm annotated the existing folk tale of Aschenputtel. The original "pantouffle de vair" (squirrel-fur slipper) was misheard/mistranslated - via the oral tradition of story-telling - to "pantouffle de verre" (glass slipper).​

The original story goes back at least as far as Ancient Greece when the footwear in question was a sandal stolen by a bird and dropped in the Prince's lap. His Highness - history's first recorded shoe fetishist - sends out the troops to find the owner, whom he marries.​
