I completely agree that the Dutch are very liberal in this area and not likely to take offense.

However we should not ignore what is happening in the world of politics. Right now in front of one of the EU high courts a government (I think it is France) is trying to get a ruling that because their citizens can see or do something on the internet then French laws should apply even though the sites in question aren't in France. Even the bureaucrats in the EU are urging the court to rule against the plaintiff because they realize that a ruling for the plaintiff would open the flood gates to any government coming into court and trying to get it's laws applied to the whole internet.

That is an incredibly frightening prospect but you know sooner or later some judge is going to use the 'logic' of 'protecting' someone from something to rule that the most stringent laws apply to the whole internet.

Autocratic governments realize that a free and open internet is the most dangerous thing to them hanging onto power. Other groups that want to control what you or I can say or think also realize that if they can control the internet they can control vast numbers of people. Why do you think China built "The Great Firewall"?

We who share this interest are a marginalized group and would be very easy to suppress in the name of "protecting" people.

I most of all would never want to suppress anything. But the barbarians are at the gate and I think we all need to be conscious that they will assault us if we give them even the slightest of reasons.

I don't mind us sailing close to the wind, but if we don't all pay attention to what we are posting we will wind up on the rocks.
