another punishment, often added to public humiliation, was an iron mask covering the face of the condemned.
I selected these two pictures ebven if the girls is still dressed because of the nice design of the mask...

A special type of iron mask was the scold's bridle or brank ("mordacchia" in italian): a mask with additional extension (sometimes spiked) inside the mouth to make it difficult to the woman to speak:

The spikes were used not only to make speaking difficult but also to "teach a woman control over her tongue". This meant that she had to keep her tongue flat and loose to avoid contact with the spikes.
