Herr Gruber, his wife Helen, Joan Baum, and the Grubers’ young French maid drove east from Paris after slaughtering the Purple Orchid in Herr Gruber’s secret headquarters. Herr Gruber insisted with his rank the chauffeured Mercedes staff car fly the Nazi flags from its front fenders. That, along with his two escort vehicles made the convoy an easy target for the Resistance. A hail of sub-machine fire eliminated the troops escorting the staff car and a sharp-shooter killed the chauffeur and Herr Gruber.
The French maid, Helen Gruber, and Joan Baum were pulled from the car, stripped, and lined up by a ditch to be executed. Joan Baum kept rattling off in German that she was just a maid brought from Germany and the real maid was really ‘Joan Baum’, the ‘Butcheress of the Gestapo’.
Joan begged in German to spare her while the real maid pleaded in French that the German woman was truly Joan Baum. The head of the Resistance raiding party had only moments to decide. He spoke both his native French and decent German. He ordered his fighters to shoot Helen and ‘Joan Baum’ in the gut… no instant kill while the real Joan Baum watched cowering and thinking ‘Damn it is chilly today. I hope these dumb bastards will give me a blanket’ as four bullets tore through the other women’s guts…

So Joan Baum convinced the Resistance she was the innocent maid. There is no record where that ‘maid’ ended up after the war. Then there was Herr Eiche Baum who either cowardly or smartly left the secret compound hours earlier. His chauffeured Mercedes was found riddled with bullets and the back half of coach burned with skeletal remains in the back seat still clinging to a drink glass.
In the front seat was the charred leather case that held communications between Eiche Baum and the highest of ranks in the Third Reich. To this day there are ‘conspiracy theorists’ that argue Joan and Eiche Baum survived the war…

My own Information'Service ( MI-S = Messa Intelligence Service ) had found that there was a marriage between a German girl ( Joan) and a Swiss/ Italian citizen (Hanginoli) in Lausanne ( on October 1945) ...
After the wedding, they were travelling to the USA, near St Louis, and two children were born :
...a boy ..... called Tree ( His american name was becoming "Hanging Tree "
) 
... and a girl ...... Joan (like her mother ...
)
......But all that is so much old that I'd never trusted those idle gossips ....
