I think prison management is too generous in providing its female prisoners sandals for their running exercises. The prison is otherwise correct in its handling of female prisoners, keeping them naked, even when outside in the rain, except for a collar to denote them as prison property during their stay, and to leave them gagged and manacled. They are only let out into the yard for routine running exercises, not allowing them any free time for themselves. But footwear, even something as basic as flip flops, is a luxury that should be completely forbidden from them when in prison. Their running exercises will be a lot more effective, if they were barefoot.

This was not how this plucky journalist had imagined getting to the heart of her investigation into the secret prisons. Now, stripped naked, tightly shackled and with a steel collar locked around her neck, she was kept in a bare concrete cell deep underground, awaiting interrogation, and wondering if she would ever see daylight again.

Who needs sunlight in the deep underground prison, when you can be surrounded with tightly shackled, naked, collared women, at the disposal of the prison staff? Sure, she may be one of them, but still.

It is important for the prisoners to be tied up when not currently useful. That way, they know that once prisoners, they are no longer allowed any freedom. They should only be occupied with serving out their punishments, and repaying their dept to society through their labor sentence. Although, embarrassed and ashamed of allowing themselves to be splayed out naked, and tied up helpless and defenseless, their time at the prison made them accept their humiliation as an everyday part of their lives, and everynight, they obediently strip naked, and stoically present themselves, stretched out, on their beds.
When tied to the bed, their bodies are not even covered by a blanket, as it is important that they understand that they aren't even allowed that dignity.
I suppose this means that I might as well kiss that Pulitzer Prize winning piece of reporting goodbye?
