The motto of New Hampshire is "Live Free or Die" but one wonders how that works in practice...They have that on their license plates along with a rock formation called "The Old Man of the Mountain", which fell down the cliff about 20 years ago...

Sadly this motto has become a cliche for those who only want certain groups to live free and probably aren't willing to put their money where their mouths are when it comes to dying.

Seems to me to be working pretty well in practice too. Ask all the soldiers who fought and died, or were wounded, fighting for democratic style governments over the last several hundred years. Pretty much it is their job to see their society 'lives free' (by its own standards) and are willing to die (or kill) to male that happen.
