He has got to be kidding. Why would I choose to stay here? To stay with the cruel brutal man who kidnapped and tortured me? To give up freedom for a lunch and a chat and then maybe more living hell?! Leave him in charge of my life? Give up my power to run my life. (Yes, I know, I’ve tended to screw it up). But I want to get out of here, back home, back to my real life.
She is thinking. Probably wondering, why I would even dream that she might take the second choice. Of course, I know she won’t. She will jump at freedom. But we all should have a dream shouldn’t we. Even plain, awkward Wilbur.
Joyce stood for over a minute, saying nothing, just staring at Wilbur and thinking about her answer.
Finally, with a beautiful smile, she said, “I’d love to talk. What is for lunch?”
