Here’s a little problem for you to ponder over as you sup your morning tipple.
Belle’s father, Wragg, was a gambler and had run up a huge amount of debt owed to Tree, the tribal chief. Now Tree had a keen eye for the ladies and had had a fancy for Belle that went back several months. In the past, each time Tree had tried to proposition Belle she had rejected him. Now, though, Tree saw his opportunity.
Confronting Wragg he said that either his daughter was forced into joining his harem or his life would be forfeit. Belle overheard this conversation and stepped in to try to save her father. Knowing that Tree liked a little gamble himself, Belle proposed that the next day she would put her future on the line for one last wager.
What she proposed was that two stones be placed in a bag – a white one and a black one – and that she would then pick one out. If it was the white one then her father’s debt would be cancelled and she would not join Tree’s harem. However, if it was the black one then her father would be executed and Belle would face a life of servitude at Tree’s hands.
So it was that the next morning the villagers gathered and formed a circle in the centre of the village to watch. Tree, Belle and her father stood in the centre of this circle. Belle watched as Tree produced a bag and then bent down to pick up a white and black stone from the many that covered the ground. Tree hoped that his slight of hand would go unnoticed but Belle’s sharp eyes spotted the deception. She was aghast and had to fight hard to suppress a gasp as she watched Tree drop the black stone in the bag and then add a second black stone that he had picked up earlier and palmed just for this occasion. The white stone he secretly discarded.
Belle realised she had a problem for no matter which stone she picked from the bag it was going to be a black one and that meant that she would have lost the wager and both she and her father would be doomed.
Her dilemma was that she had to take a stone from the bag and she could not denounce Tree as a cheat or in any other way that would cause him to be embarrassed or shown up in front of the villagers.
Gritting her teeth, Belle reached into the bag and wrapped her fingers round a stone. As she started to withdraw her hand she had a flash of inspiration and realised that there was a solution to her problem – one that would save both her father and her and leave Tree’s honour intact.
So – what was Belle’s answer to this difficult situation?
A plea – if you do know the answer can you please let those that don’t have a go at solving it before you post. Many thanks.

Bah, easy. Slip a bottle of white nail polish down your sleeve and pour it over the stones. No need to feel guilty about cheating, since Tree already did.
