The first one is about a beautiful Surinam slave girl Lydia who had a relation with a free man called Frans. Her owner Johanna did not approve and she had her whipped by the executioner of Paramaribo. It caused some commotion then because the slaveholder was a black woman and Lydia was what was then called a mulatto (read half-white) girl.
