Hilary Mantel, the author of the highly-regarded historical fiction trilogy about Thomas Cromwell, Counsellor to Henry VIII, has died at 70. The first two, Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies won the Booker Prize and sold in the millions. The historical re-enactment of the interrogation, trial and execution (almost) of Anne Boleyn in @Barbaria1 and my story, London Calling, was based on her work, which we cited in the story.

Rest in Mantelpeace.

Actress Louise Fletcher (1934-2022). She got particularly famous for her role as nurse Ratched in One Flew overr tthe Cuckoo's Nest (1975), a role for which she won an Oscar. But the Oscar never brought her a big career.
I don't think she ever wanted to be a superstar. She had taken a break from acting to raise her children before returning in 1974. At the age of 40, getting any major role was difficult and Cuckoo's Nest ensured that she got steady work for the rest of her career, which is more than many actors can say. Her last credit, per IMDB, was in a 2017 Netfix series.

Mmmm .... you've gotta distinguish between 'stars' and 'actors'. The former look good in front of cameras, some may even have 'charisma' ... but the latter actually have serious thespian talent.

Louise Fletcher was one of the latter. A very talented actor.

Well said, and yes she was a very good actress.

I always thought she have made an awesome female Dom, and I mean that with great respect & as a compliment.

Dame Angela Lansbury has left us at 96.

She'll be remembered as Jessica Fletcher, and for Mame and Sweeney Todd. But I will always recall how she scared the hell out of me in this.

On a less terrifying note, some years ago I was pleased to learn she posed nude in her most comely youth.

I’ll remember her most for her appearance in “Bedknobs and Broomsticks”, which you’ll be surprised to hear is a children’s film, not a porno, and definitely not a list of things @Barbaria1 has sexually experimented with on a wet Thursday afternoon. :p

I well remember the Manchurian Candidate, and she was an evil bitch in that one. Frankly, the whole damn movie was creepy-scary.

Sorry to hear she's passed on, but at 96 she had a good long run.

Love the portrait too.

That was a great performance. So great, you can't even tell that she was only three years older than her "son" Lawrence Harvey.
Ironically, Henry Silva, who played one of the Chinese bad guys in that movie, died September 14 at the age of 95.
