I think we did OK with just 3 networks.
Tampa had more options than most places. We had ABC, CBS, NBC, plus 2 PBS stations and, most of the decade 2 independents.

Not to mention Walter Cronkite, the last news reporter to be trusted by just about everybody.

"MORITURIS" (2011) is an italian slasher thriller shown at various International Festivals whose theatrical vision in Italy was however forbidden by the Commission of Censors. A Young director, at his first experience, carried out this controversial film. Taking (freely) as a starting point the criminal events occurred at the Circeo ( a resort distant
about 100 km from Rome) in the sixties he put up a successful mixture of real and imaginary. The story puts at the center three upper class young men who invite two girls from the East to a 'rave': an excuse to drive them to a solitary place for raping and killing purposes. Acts of disturbing
violence of all kinds are perpetrated by the three of them on the girls but this seems to recall from the past a bunch oof 'Zombies Gladiators'
gone mad at the time of Spartacus the rebel slave (72 B.C.). A surge of ruthless savagery and revengeful violence of the Gladiators falls on both the girls and the men. No cruelty is spared to the viewer. Two thirds of the movie's sets are (purposely) poorly lit and photographed in dim rather fading color tones, but acting is good and it keeps you anchored to your seat all the time. I will only mention two scenes among the
most impressive :
- a girl has her hand nailed to a wall, she is then brutally detached , laid on a wooden cross, has her arms nailed and the cross is raised.
After hanging for a short time she is pierced by a lance and dies.
-a friend of the Group of men, a sadist, is at his home torturing a naked woman in various ways ,including use of scissors and a mouse,
while watching on TV a torture scene from "The Bloody Pit of Horror" (1966)

I was unable to open the links, but this one has the naked girl crucified on it, very nice , but sadly they don't let her suffer long on the cross.

I watched the scene more than once and,if I am correct, the girl is before nailed to the wall by her right hand then we see the gladiator
nailing one wrist of hers to the cross. But, as I previously said, scenes are badly lit and the nailing sequence very short.

People who saw 'BRIMSTONE" (2016)could have found its contents 'unpleasant'. Actually a lot can be said on the crude situations depicted in this film but not on the director's ambitions,successful indeed , to represent a young woman's courage to take her destiny in her own hands against all odds. I will not insert many details of the story in this
space . I only add that the Young woman is , since her childhood, subject to her father's violence, tortures and abuses. She runs away but is pursued by her father a Reverend and an incarnation of true Evil. The film is set in places and age of the old West but not centered on the traditional
characters of the 'Western' movie genre. Guy Pearce plays the Reverend, Dakota Fanning is the fugitive daughter : on my advise their acting
deserves applause. Lovers of women whipping and other torture scenes will not be disappointed. This film is worth seeing . Only potential
first time viewers please be prepared to 'strong' situations.

I agree, and he tore her hand away from the wall in a quite realistic way, emphasising how body-weight would tear a nail if used in the hand on a cross.

Actually, I think when he nails her to the wall, and again when she's crucified, the nail goes through the point where the thumb bone meets the wrist, which at least some of the authorities I've seen quoted here is recommended as the optimum spot for crux-nailing. It's a luscious scene, with a good build-up when we think she might escape ... but ...! And the spear-jab in the side of her breast at the end, owwwww, I can feel it!

"PEKING OPERA BLUES" is a 1986 Hong Kong film comprehensive of action,comedy and drama set in Peking in the year 1913 involving Peking Opera and the quite unlikely adventures of 3 heroines.
This product was directed by Tsui Hark a prolific Chinese Director/Producer of movies of various genres including the series
of films on famous DETECTIVE DEE. The reason why I am mentioning 'Peking Opera Blues' in this space is an intriguing
whipping scene of a young pretty girl .

A group of teenagers spend their weekend in the woods. Jules (Hutchinson) is just getting ready for some sexy time with her boyfriend (Chris Hemsworth) when they are surprised by the local redneck zombie family. As a greeting, Jules gets a knife driven through her hand. When she tries to run away, the zombie boss rams a bear trap on a chain into her back and pulls her up on it. Her head is then cut off with an oversized saw. At least the zombies are nice enough to return her head to her friends.

Despite being a horror parody, "The Cabin in the Woods" has some very graphic images (as seen in this case). And once the horror movie clichees are checked off the list, the plot gets a nice twist in the last 30 minutes.

Another 1986 Hong-Kong war film:'HEROES SHED NO TEARS" directed by the famous John Woo. (almost entirelyshot by him exception made for some sex and drugs scenes). The plot: a group of Chinese mercenaries are committed by Thailand Government to capture a vicious drug's lord in the 'Golden Triangle' area at the border between Vietnam and Laos. The lord is seized
but his men would not make life easy to the capturers. Furthermore the mercenaries , across Vietnam's territory, must confront a sadistic
Vietnamese colonel thus endangering also the lives of the family of the mercenaries' leader,living in a village near the border.
The film's location is Thailand and it contains some violent scenes one of which is attached. This H.Kong product sees participation of
multinational artists: director Woo from China, 3 Korean Actors, 2 French (actress and actor),1 Japanese cameraman. It was originally
titled by Woo "The sunset Warrior" then retitled 'Heroes shed no tears' upon first release in H.Kong.

"THE DEVIL HUNTER" (aka "El Canibal", aka "The manhunter")
is one of Jess Franco's 'nasties' of 1980: in this film all the distinctive marks of Franco (camera zooming on female 'bushes',explicit sex,etc.)
make the joy of his admirers. For lovers of bondage, rape and abuse many scenes see girls bound naked to poles or X crosses subject
to the violence of a black broad shouldered guy with prominent blood stained eyeballs, worshipped by the tribe of a deserted Island, who
eats the heart of women offered to him in sacrifice. A beautiful blonde model kidnapped for ransom, a white hunter hired by the model's Producers to exchange her for the money, the group of kidnappers all try to run afoul of the tribe and of their vicious God. The fake exotic settings,
the bad acting and some involuntarily laughable situations put this one in a low cathegory of filming but you will enjoy it simply as
a care-free entertainment as the fans of Franco certainly do.

"COLOR OF THE NIGHT" is an erotic thriller of 1994 starring Bruce Willis and Jane March.
A few sado masochistic situations are shown in this film, mostly toward the end, though many more are only suggested. A very short one shows
deep marks of a whip on the back of Jane March. The film has one of the best sex scenes of film history: Bruce Willis and sensuous British actress Jane March put into action a real looking and emotional love scene, starting into a swimming pool then concluding in bed. The film has also a haunting powerful theme song "The color of the night" , performed by Lauren Christy, ranking among the best in cinema themes. The plot centers on a depressed New York psychiatrist (Willis) who falls into a psychosomatic color blindness after living a dramatic event, he afterwards regains color vision through the experience of a new drama. He has travelled to Los Angeles to stay with a friend psychiatrist and got involved in the uneasy problems of a Group of persons under his friend's therapy, after his friend Doctor has been murdered by one of them. From now on he falls into a spiral of deception, sex and violence including attempts to his life. Critics' response to the film was bad in due course going from 'not credible'' to "obvious" and "resembling a bad dream". Frankly I liked it beyond any reserve (but tastes are personal).

Another Hollywood's jump into psycho crime thriller suggesting, more than showing, sexual perversions is "WHISPERS IN THE DARK" (1992). The cast includes Annabella Sciorra, Deborah Kara Unger, Alan Alda, Jill Clayburgh. Sciorra plays a New York psychiatrist obsessed by recurrent dreams of violent sexual intercourses.
She seeks help from a fellow psychiatrist and from his wife. Her life has a new turn when she meets an airline pilot and starts a passionate affair
with him. Unexpected circumstances are around the corner when she finds out that her lover had a relationship with a woman , used to play soumise in dangerous sado masochistic practices, whose naked dead body has just been found by police hanging from the ceiling with a rope around her neck. The woman was a patient of the Doctor and the pilot,her lover, is the first one suspected. Scenes worth of notice are :
- Sciorra laying on the floor, hands and feet tied up, has her back burnt with a cigarette by one of her patients turned schizophrenic
-brief shots of a roped suspended nude woman practicing sex in the psychiatrist's troubled dreams
- images of bound naked girls used by the patient shown to the psychiatrist by the police.

"GARAGE OLIMPO" (Italy/Argentina 1999) treats the horrors perpetrated by Argentina's dictatorship in the years 1976-1982. It is partly based on a personal experience of Mario Bechis the director. Bechis was born in Chile from Chilean mother and Italian father: he lived in Argentina but was expelled in 1977 after a few months' detention in a secret prison in Buenos Aires.
The film's ultimate purpose is a crude report of Argentina's 'dirty war' events in those years through the story of Maria's tragedy, a young teacher working in Buenos Aires suburbs, arrested on charge of being a member of a Group opposing Videla's military regime.
She is brought to Garage Olimpo a former car repair shop in Buenos Aires outfitted as a detention and torture center. Maria is at first submitted to electric shocks to reveal the name of her accomplice. Felix a young man, rejected lover of hers and one of her mother's tenants, is one of the torturers. He replaces the former torturer after her heart had stopped following excessive regulation of voltage. From now on Felix will try, at his own risk, to relieve Maria's sufferings or at least protect her from further humiliations.
With the time the relationship between the victim and her tormentor becomes more an more close.
Other dramatic situations occurr, including Maria's mother tragic death, before the unexpected ending. The film boasts, beside a realistic acting, a skilled use of the camera moving from the gloomy garage, where interrogation scenes take nearly half of the film's diuration, to the sun lit Buenos Aires alleys,the intense traffic, the reassuring radio broadcasts of music and football matches: all activities of a civilized Country's life running normally with common people unaware (or intentionally ignorant) of the savage repressions carried out in locked places under their nose.
If my memory does not fail I read some time ago that the movie was never released in USA but perhaps it is no more so.
