Don't forget that until the inter-war years, the only way men shaved, never mind women, was with cutthroat razors. And even early safety razors don't look very convenient for shaving intimate parts. It was probably only in the 60s that 'ladies' razors' came on the market, and electric ones a good bit later.

Well, I guess, someone who is now the unit of pressure is completely wrong, because the noses of Julius and Mark Antony were short, and then their penises are short to, in German we say (Wie die Nase des Mannes, ist die Länge seines Johannes) translated, as the nose of the men is the length of his penis, they had to pregnant Cleopatra, the hairy other females prevented the entry.... and I have other historical evidence, here is the statue of Julius Cesar

I suspect it had to do with the ever diminishing size of female swim wear. As I recall from back then, the disappearance of women's pubic hair was in direct correlation to the size of the bikini bottom. I don't think the timing of that was a coincidence.

That could be. It is another example of the evolution theory. So the male species of the humans picked up only those wearing tiny bikinis. It could also be the aerobic movement in the 1980is

There seem to be two opinions. Those in favour of shaving, often state that pubic hair covers, at least partly, the genitals. Another viewpoint is however, that pubic hair is part of the genitals. It appears around the age that the genitals start developing to adult shapes. So the appearrance of pubic hair is one of the first signs of 'growing up' and 'getting big'. Although intimate, it is something to look for, when longing for adulthood. That's how it was in my youth. Pubic hair was associated with adulthood, and I am still in favor of that perception.

Well if natural selection were at work, males would be selecting females who 'naturally' (i.e. because of their particular genes) have less pubic hair, and breeding daughters who'd be growing less and less of the stuff in each generation. I don't think there's much sign of that happening. It really only could happen if there were a substantial surplus of women too hairy to attract males so get left on the shelf - or a social order in which attractive, i.e. less hairy, females are impregnated by lots of men while the hairies are rejected. Scenario for a CF sci-fi story, maybe?

But wouldn't there always be some males who prefer the hairy ladies left on the shelf?

I remember Playboy in the 70's, when women still had pubic hair and the labia were censored out so everything was equally dark. It took a whiole to discover where a vagina entrance was actually situated. This of course had a reaction later on, where labia had to be shown in intimate detail and pubic hair just got in the way. So I blame porn.

I think the discussion in this thread supports that. I was responding to dfg42's nice idea, but I think (as a woman who doesn't bother to shave except outwith the bikini line, unless it's to please a partner) that it is a matter of fashion, and actually only in the western - or western -imitating - world. Like preferences for big or small boobs, skinny or chubby bodies etc., such fashions come and go, though they cause growing girls a hell of a lot of misery and anxiety.
