It seems the 'pear of anguish' was no earlier than that, either. Such things were part of the craze for 'Gothic' horrors, they would certainly add interest and excitement to a gentleman's residence, when he showed his collection of interesting instruments to his excited young lady guests!

Hopefully he locked the doors and windows first!

She is not meant to remain in the drawn position: The wheel will be turned until her body- especially her feminine parts - are exposed to the fire, Not longer, until the flames scorched her skin lightly: She must endure many more passes.

A forward-looking, sadistic-compassionate torturer will drench the ropes, face and hair in water before each passage. And maybe oil her skin.

Sure: She will finally loose all her body-hair.
